Violet

— Bow & Arrow Upholstery

The Violet armchair is a deconstruction of the traditional armchair. In late 2013, a private industrialist approached Pedro and commissioned two challenging projects: the creation of a new brand for his company and the development of new products for his first collection. He requested the design of an armchair for his first collection. The brief was simple: it had to be exceptionally comfortable and relaxing.

This allowed for freedom to explore the armchair structurally. Pedro was intrigued by the idea of using the frame as something more than a functional base. After stripping down the armchair, a framework was designed upon which simple upholstered quilts could be laid. The utilitarian, internal structure of an armchair is usually hidden from view and is designed for support rather than for aesthetic qualities. By contrast, the frame of the Violet armchair is designed to be exposed.

Handcrafted from oak timber or in beech by skilled craftsmen, it was manufactured to precision. With all the internal stuffing and padding removed to reveal the round wooden structure, large padded cushions are used to create comfortable seating.

Violet was the first piece that Pedro designed for Bow & Arrow and it was launched during the 100% DESIGN 2014 in London.
